Now, here’s a motley crew with family ties spanning Britain, West Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
On their own, scotch bonnets, habaneros, naga chillies and Trinidadian Moruga scorpions each have a lot to say for themselves – each hold their own on flavour profile and strength of spice. And they can all make a pretty fanfare about it.
Here, these four firebrands come together in the loving arms of Mama Africa. Led by the scotch bonnet, this blend is harmonised with a touch of ground Uziza spice, dried crayfish and dried shrimp, creating a rich deep flavour that merits a shanty of its own. Expect endorphins that only a barrel-based bonding session of brotherly love can deliver from this quartet.
As melodic as their shanties are though, don’t mistake these guys for anything but heavies. If you’re not well versed, they’ll deliver more than just a tuneful hum. You’ve been warned.
